’Alvalade é uma das mais recentes freguesias de Lisboa, na sequência da reorganização administrativa de 8 de novembro de 2012, que entrou em vigor em 29 de setembro de 2013. A nova freguesia uniu as antigas freguesias de Alvalade, Campo Grande e São João de Brito e a sua história remonta inevitavelmente ao passado destes três territórios.

Alvalade era, até meados do século XX, essencialmente formada por campos, quintas e hortas, usadas para os momentos de veraneio da nobreza e, posteriormente, como espaço de recreio e desporto da população. Aqui se realizavam alguns dos acontecimentos mais importantes da vida da cidade, como a feira do gado e a Batalha das Flores, que tiveram lugar no Campo Grande.

Nasceu enquanto freguesia em 1852, passando a integrar o Concelho de Lisboa em 1885. Associada ao desenvolvimento da cidade, é dividida em 1959, dando origem às freguesias de Campo Grande, de Alvalade e de São João de Brito.

Nos anos 30 do século XX a freguesia conhece o seu período de maior desenvolvimento, com grandes projetos de arquitetura integrados no Plano de Urbanização da Zona Sul da Avenida Alferes Malheiro, dos quais podemos destacar a Avenida de Roma, o Bairro das Estacas, o Bairro de São Miguel, as Torres da Avenida dos Estados Unidos da América e, já nos anos 40, a construção do Bairro de Alvalade. Nos anos 70, inauguram-se várias estações de metro da linha verde, um dos principais meios de transporte da cidade. Alvalade foi considerada um símbolo da Lisboa Moderna.

Na década de 80, surgiu uma nova vaga de construção, erguendo-se vários edifícios na Cidade Universitária, como a Torre do Tombo e novas faculdades.
