Segundo reza a história, houve uma família inglesa que, sendo perseguida pela Rainha Vitória, fugiu do país e instalou-se, nesta ilha, no lugar do Livramento.

Tão reconhecida ficou a referida família por se encontrar em lugar seguro e livre que, em sinal de agradecimento, mandou construir uma ermida dedicada a Nossa Senhora do Livramento.

Da invocação da ermida derivaria o nome desta localidade.

A zona vizinha do litoral foi, outrora, um grande areal que aparece sempre todas as vezes que se torna necessário escavar a camada de terra arável que o cobre.
