(Breve História sobre o Edifício) - Em meados do século XVII inicia-se a história do antigo Convento de Nossa Senhora da Encarnação das Carmelitas Descalças, que teve a sua origem no pagamento de uma promessa, por parte de D. Manuel da Cunha, Bispo de Elvas, que, doente, na sua quinta da Espiçandeira (Quinta de D. Carlos), melhorara graças ao auxílio da Senhora da Encarnação de Alenquer. A promessa consistia na construção de uma igreja em sua invocação, o que veio a acontecer em Olhalvo, para onde se transferiu a imagem de Alenquer. Em 1646 lavram-se as escrituras patronais e, no ano seguinte, instalam-se, nas imediações de Olhalvo, os primeiros religiosos, que ainda no mesmo ano tomam posse da nova igreja, hospício e terra pertencentes. Passados poucos anos, novas obras de ampliação se iniciaram, envolvendo algumas demolições, obras muito demoradas, visto que ainda não estavam prontas quando em 1755 ocorreu o Terramoto. Este derrubará as abóbodas do corpo e da capela-mor da igreja e arruinará os dormitórios. As obras terminaram só em 1833, ano anterior à extinção das Ordens Religiosas. O Convento e respectiva cerca acabaram por ser vendidos em leilão, em 1841, ao Visconde de Fonte Arcada, tendo 1864 residido aqui o 1.º Barão de Alenquer.

(Brief History of the Building) - In the mid-17th century, the history of the former Convent of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação das Carmelitas Descalças began, originating from a vow made by D. Manuel da Cunha, Bishop of Elvas. He had fallen ill on his estate in Espiçandeira (Quinta de D. Carlos) and had recovered thanks to the aid of Senhora da Encarnação de Alenquer. The vow consisted of building a church in her invocation, which happened in Olhalvo, where the image from Alenquer was transferred. In 1646, the patronage deeds were drawn up, and in the following year, the first religious settled in the vicinity of Olhalvo, taking possession of the new church, hospice, and land. A few years later, new expansion works began, involving some demolitions, which were very time-consuming. They were not yet completed when the Earthquake of 1755 occurred. This earthquake brought down the vaults of the main body and the chancel of the church and ruined the dormitories. The works were only completed in 1833, a year before the extinction of the Religious Orders. The Convent and its surroundings were eventually sold at auction in 1841 to the Viscount of Fonte Arcada. In 1864, the 1st Baron of Alenquer resided here.

Manuel da Cunha, évêque d’Elvas. Il était tombé malade sur sa propriété à Espiçandeira (Quinta de D. Carlos) et s’était rétabli grâce à l’aide de Senhora da Encarnação de Alenquer. Le vœu consistait à construire une église en son invocation, ce qui s’est produit à Olhalvo, où l’image d’Alenquer a été transférée. En 1646, les actes de patronage ont été rédigés et, l’année suivante, les premiers religieux se sont installés dans les environs d’Olhalvo, prenant possession de la nouvelle église, du hospice et des terres. Quelques années plus tard, de nouveaux travaux d’expansion ont commencé, impliquant quelques démolitions, ce qui a pris beaucoup de temps. Ils n’étaient pas encore terminés lorsque le séisme de 1755 s’est produit. Cet tremblement de terre a fait s’effondrer les voûtes du corps principal et du chœur de l’église et a ruiné les dortoirs. Les travaux n’ont été achevés qu’en 1833, un an avant l’extinction des Ordres religieux. Le couvent et ses environs ont finalement été vendus aux enchères en 1841 au vicomte de Fonte Arcada. En 1864, le 1er baron d’Alenquer y résidait.
