Ribatejo

The province of Ribatejo concentrates a large number of tourists and natural attractions. This is where the Lezíria is located, where there is a wide variety of agricultural crops, from vines to melons. Benavente

Proud of its famous cattle farms of recognised value throughout the country, and of the typical and courageous figure that is the campino that with its garish clothes gives a special colour to the Lezíria and to the traditional festivals, with great exhibitions in the games of halters, typical shows of this region, such as the Friendship/Sardine Festival. Benavente also has two museums, the Municipal Museum of Benavente and the Agricultural Centre, housed in the former Municipal Slaughterhouse, with a permanent exhibition, ’The Agricultural Calendar’.

A milestone in fado Portuguese

Built in 1878, the Manor marked a generation. Heart of Fado in Ribatejo, this cultural symbol of the village opened doors to fado singers such as Hermínia Silva, an icon of Portuguese popular song. A glamorous place at the time, with chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, curtains and fine crockery, as well as landscape paintings and portraits that only the best presented could appreciate, due to the required dress code. After many years, it continues to be one of the main references in the history of Benavente, a majestic building still very present in the memory of the people.

A fado singer for all tastes.

In addition to having marked the nights at Solar de Benavente, accompanied by its illustrious cast, Hermínia Silva, an artist born in Lisbon on October 23, 1907, recorded numerous albums where there was no shortage of references to the Ribatejo lands: Fado Ribatejano (1958) and Quando há feira em Benavente (1970), these are some of the trails. Hermínia Silva also participated in the films ’Um Homem do Ribatejo’, from 1946, and in its sequel, ’Ribatejo’, from 1949. The fado singer only appeared again on the movie screens, in 1969, in the film ’O Diabo Era Outro’. The film includes two scenes filmed at Solar da Hermínia. She has also participated in several plays throughout her ever-active and remarkable career.
