About the region:

With a climate like San Francisco, Sao Martinho offers ample opportunity for outdoor activity. As you walk from your doorstep 5 or 15 minutes to a few different scenic overlooks and beaches, you’ll find people biking, swimming, fishing, windsurfing, paragliding, and, of course, enjoying the fresh ocean air.

To sample what it’s like to live in picturesque Sao Martinho, also visit a few of the unique and charming towns nearby that surround it. To the north along the coast, you’ll find Nazare, where professional surfers ride waves as tall as 25 meters. To the south along the coast, you’ll find Foz do Arelho, where kite surfers flock to one of the largest lagoons in Europe. Inland, you’ll find Alcobaca or Caldas da Rainha, where there’s more shopping, restaurants, public tennis courts with friendly league play, and a public park featuring cafes, a pond, and birdlife such as ducks, geese, swans, and peacocks. Each town is accessible by bus or car (20 minutes) by regular highways or roads. (Perfect for biking, too. ) Collectively, this part of Portugal’s ’Silver Coast’ is within a reasonable distance north of Lisboa (1 hour by car/bus, 2 hours by train). (Sao Martinho has a train station. The other seaside towns do not.
