Santiago do Cacém is a Portuguese city in the District of Setúbal, it is the seat of one of the largest municipalities in Portugal, with an area of 1,059.77 km².
It is the seat of one of the largest municipalities in Portugal, with an area of 1,059.77 km² and 29,749 inhabitants (2015 INE), subdivided into 8 parishes.
The municipality is bordered to the north by Grândola, to the northeast by Ferreira do Alentejo, to the east by Aljustrel, to the south by Ourique and Odemira and to the west by Sines and has a coastline on the Atlantic Ocean. It is the only municipality in the whole of Alentejo that contains 2 cities within its boundary (Santiago and Santo André). It also has three villages (Cercal, Alvalade and Ermidas-Sado).

Culture and leisure:
There are many popular and cultural events in the municipality: the feast of Our Lady of Grace, held on the last Sunday of May, with various religious ceremonies, namely prayer meetings, and the annual fairs, on the fourth Sunday of April and the fourth Sunday of July; Santiagro, ’Agricultural Fair’, in May, for economic and cultural promotion; FATAL - Handicraft and Tourism Fair of the Alentejo Litoral; the traditional festivals of Relvas Verdes, both in July; the Monte Fair, in September; the traditional festivities of Aldeia dos Chãos, in August, and the Day of the Municipality, on July 25th.

As a cultural facility, the municipality has the Municipal Museum of Santiago do Cacém, in which the numismatics and archaeology sections are noteworthy, the latter representative of the human occupation in the region, since the times of the Upper Paleolithic. In the ethnography collection, the highlight is the traditional Alentejo cuisine, to which is added the recreation of a popular room, which contrasts with another with a markedly bourgeois taste and which is part of a remarkable legacy of one of the families of the region - the Counts of Avillez.
In 1895 the first automobile arrived in Portugal, owned by the Count of Avilez, from Santiago do Cacém;
As a curiosity, the 1st Rolls Royce that came to Portugal, also came to Santiago do Cacém, owned by José Sande Champalimaud and the car registration with no. 1, in 1904, also went to Santiago do Cacém, in the name of Augusto Teixeira de Aragão.

Located close to the Alentejo coast, in the undulating lands between the eastern slope of Serra do
Cercal, to the east, and the Alentejo peneplain, to the west, the place is part of the Terras do Alto Sado, one of the
landscape units of this region, characterized by a smooth and undulating relief quite
contrasting with the mountain landscape that separates it from the coast.
The landscape is dotted with distant villages, translating the agro-pastoral logic of the
extensive cork oak landscape. The horizons are quite extensive, punctuated by references
geomorphological areas such as Serra do Cercal or the Ribeira de Campilhas floodplain and characterized by
a feeling of grandeur and serenity associated with the earthy tones of the landscape. The geology and
soils define the anthropic character of this landscape not only due to the plant cultures present and the
consequent structuring of space, but also by the architectural languages that these
derive, with emphasis on the important role of rammed earth as a construction material for houses
ground floors and the boundary walls of rural properties.
Alentejo is inspiring!
It is a territory that disappears from sight, marked by the gold of the plains and the blue of the Atlantic,
a kind of vision of ’Africa’ in Europe and within Portugal.
Its landscape fills our soul with an endless time, a wild freedom to let go of everything
and run across the plains to embrace the wind. The coastline made of grass and kissed white sand
by the intense blue of the ocean, in a practically untouched landscape. A beauty that strips us
of everything, leaving only the essence of our being, appealing to our ’wild side’, to our nature
nomadic ancestor.

Location:
Cercal do Alentejo is a Portuguese village belonging to the municipality of Santiago do Cacém, with 136.40 km² of area.

Being situated less than 15 kilometers from the beaches of the Alentejo Coast, it has a temperate climate, which allows it to have one of the most diverse faunas and floras of the entire Southwest Alentejo.

It was the county seat between 1836 and 1855. It was constituted by the parishes of Cercal, Colos and Vila Nova de Milfontes. It had, in 1849, 3 255 inhabitants.
The village was elevated on June 20, 1991, and its designation was changed from Cercal to Cercal do Alentejo.

Being situated less than 15 kilometers from the beaches of the Alentejo Coast, it has a temperate climate, which allows it to have one of the most diverse faunas and floras of the entire Southwest Alentejo.

Economy:
In the 19th century, mining was developed, particularly in the 1970s, with the discovery of new ores such as barite, manganese and manganite.

The largest exploration in this area was, however, iron, with five mines of this type of extraction: Cerro da Fonte, Santa de Cima, Toca do Mocho, Serra da Mina, Serra das Tulhas and Serra de Rosalgar. However, these mines ended their activity in 2000.

Cercal do Alentejo presented indispensable reserves of ferrous minerals, useful to various metallurgical and metalworking industries.

Physically, the ore from the Serra das Tulhas mine was similar to the Serra da Mina and Toca do Mocho concessions - it was massive, not very compact and of medium hardness. Sometimes it appeared hard and spongy, but in regions where the manganese content rose a lot, it became a bit earthy.

From a chemical point of view, it can be said that the ore was frankly good. Silica rarely exceeded 5%, and alumina also did not present high levels. As for iron, the content was usually 50% and the manganese had levels ranging from 6 to 13%, which valued the ore very much.

Em 1895 chega a Portugal o primeiro automóvel, propriedade do Conde de Avilez, de Santiago do Cacém;
