During the Muslim rule, between the years 711 and 1147, one could speak of 2 Alfamas:

a more aristocratic Alfama do Alto, located within the Moorish fence, in the eastern part of the current parish of Sé, which would communicate through the Porta de Alfama or São Pedro (in the current Rua de São João da Praça);
an Alfama do Mar, a popular suburb.

This neighbourhood is probably the nicest in the city. The era of decline came in the Middle Ages, when wealthy residents moved west, leaving the neighbourhood to a population of fishermen and sailors.

Most of the buildings withstood the earthquake of 1755.
Although there are practically no Moorish houses any more, the neighbourhood preserves some of the atmosphere of that time (pay attention to the casbá with its alleys, staircases and clothes drying on the windows). The most ruined areas have undergone extensive restoration work and life develops quietly around the small grocery stores and taverns.
