Mendiga
Não se sabe ao certo a origem do nome desta localidade, mas segundo a tradição oral, no início do povoamento da Mendiga existiam apenas três casa nas quais teriam habitado alguns mendigos, dando origem ao topónimo ’Mendiga’.

No entanto, alguns historiadores desmentem tal facto afirmando que a localidade teve sempre muitos habitantes, tendo até havido homens que ajudaram D.Fuas Roupinho a tomar Porto de Mós aos Mouros.

Certo é que também que na primeira edição do Couceiro, está referido que D. Afonso Henriques a 20 de Janeiro de 1165 concedeu o privilégio a 15 homens da região, para que povoassem toda a extensão de terras ásperas e despovoadas até Minde. A estes povoadores foi-lhes imposto que dessem pousada, roupa e comida aos caminhantes e mendigos que por ali passassem visto que a mendiga se situava numa posição estratégica, por não ser um ponto de passagem de muito trânsito e pessoas.

Sendo assim, todas estas informações dificultam a obtenção verdadeira da origem do nome ’Mendiga’.

Mendiga foi um curato da apresentação da Colegiada de S. João de Porto de Mós, tendo sido desanexada em 1525 por determinação do Arcebispo de Lisboa, Cardeal-Infante D. Afonso.

Alguns anos mais tarde foi então elevada á categoria de freguesia. Pertenceu á Comarca de Leiria em 1839, tendo sido integrada na Comarca de Porto de Mós em 1884. Enquanto durou a supressão deste concelho, também esteve anexada ao concelho de Alcobaça, de 7 de Setembro de 1895 a 13 de Janeiro de 1898, ano que regressou á tutela do restaurado município de Porto de Mós, a que ainda hoje pertence.

Assim se desenvolveu Mendiga, integrada em Porto de Mós que em honra dos santos da sua predileção construiu vários monumentos. A Igreja matriz atual substituía a antiga igreja, entretanto demolida no início dos anos 70, localizada no centro da Mendiga foi inaugurada em 1968, sendo o seu orago Julião. Enquanto à Igreja paroquial, a Igreja Velha da Mendiga, que hoje só resta memória tinha um interior riquíssimo com um altar em talha dourada, destacando-se os quatro painéis de azulejo, representando a última Ceia, o presépio e alguns passos da vida de Santa Maria Madalena. Segundo consta a imagem da Santa tinha os olhos furados por duas balas, das Invasões Francesas. Um outro templo construído recentemente pelo povo, inaugurado em (19.) localiza-se no lugar da Cabeça Veada a Capela de Nossa Senhora de Fátima.

Hoje a Mendiga é uma aldeia que dá cartas a nível da indústria extrativa de rochas ornamentais, destacando-se a calçada branca, aplicada pelo mundo.
