The Bakery of Chaves was designed by Nadir Afonso, architect, painter and thinker flaviense and finished in 1962. The history of the Bakery of Chaves begins just before when Nadir Afonso was hired by the two main bakers of the city to design a building where they could merge all their establishments and companies, thus giving rise to the Bakery of Chaves.

The building is situated on Avenida Nuno Álvares in a strategic area of the city then under development. It has a single plant and obeys a tripartite and sequential organization. It has a clear influence of Brazilian architecture; we know that Nadir Afonso worked in Brazil from 1952 to 1954 with the architect Óscar Niemeyer. As an alternative to orthogonality, semicircular and hyperboloid surfaces emerge. The plastic sensitivity of Nadir Afonso - an architect and especially a painter - is also evident in the freedom of the color game attributed to a series of glazed planes of the façade of the building. The Bakery of Chaves is considered of public interest in 2006 and is one of the reference works of Portuguese architecture of the twentieth century.
