The Church of Nossa Senhora da Presentação was established as a parish on February 12, 1592, by royal charter from Philip II (I of Portugal), at the request of the then bishop of Angra, D. Manuel de Gouveia. The main church (16th century) bore the title ’Matriz-Prioral’.
It was elevated to town and county seat by Charter of July 23, 1839. The municipality was made up of the parishes of Brittany, Capelas, Fenais da Luz, Santo António and São Vicente Ferreira. In 1849, it had 9,026 inhabitants.
However, the council was ephemeral, never having fully assumed its respective functions. It was extinguished in 1855, returning its territory to the municipality of Ponta Delgada. Never losing the title of Town but falling into oblivion, the category of town was reinforced on June 24, 2003 by Regional Legislative Decree No. 29/2003/A, of June 24, of the Legislative Assembly. The populations of Capelas and neighboring parishes demand the restoration of the municipality.
The town of Capelas was an important center for sperm whale hunting, with a whaling operation operating in its small port in the first half of the 20th century. A sperm whale oil and flour factory was installed near the port (Poços). When this activity ended, it fell into ruins and was later demolished, leaving only the main chimney.
