A Vila Cosme foi edificada em 1556 por Cosme de Lafetá, filho de um mercador milanês residente em Lisboa de nome João Francisco Lafeitar (nome que viria a ser aportuguesado para Lafetá), mercador este que se dedicava ao comércio de produtos provenientes da Índia, tendo inclusivamente participado na segunda armada de Vasco da Gama. Seu filho, Cosmo desempenhou também alguns cargos na Índia como o de capitão-mor no cerco de Chaul, tendo ainda em 1571 e em 1598, lhe sido concedidas as capitanias de Sofala e Diu. No século XVII a propriedade passa a pertencer aos domínios dos condes de Soure, ainda descendentes dos Lafetás e, em 20 de dezembro de 1879, foi adquirida por Sir Francis Cook, rico comerciante inglês, colecionador de arte e primeiro Visconde de Monserrate, nome da quinta que comprou em 1855 e que se encontrava muito próximo, se tivermos em conta que antiga propriedade era mais ampla.
