In 1513, Serpa received a charter letter from King Manuel who, before being king, had been lord of Serpa. This foral speaks little of the organization and political and social activity of the municipality. It insists mainly on the tax burden. In any case, the reading of the Manueline foral suggests that Serpa was, at the beginning of the sixteenth century, a village where pastoralism persisted as an activity of great relevance, but in which handicrafts and commercial activity reach a high level of development.
Its location, close to the Spanish border, caused serious problems for the development of this municipality. With the wars of the Restoration, Serpa was almost completely destroyed, namely his fortress.’
