It is located on the right bank of the Ribeira de Safrino, a tributary of the Ribeira da Figueira, which in turn flows into the Sado River. The soils are mainly from the Tertiary Period. Another watercourse that passes in the vicinity of Ferreira do Alentejo is the Vale de Ouro stream.
The region of Ferreira do Alentejo is essentially agricultural, producing mainly cereals, olive oil, cork, wine and woolly cattle. It has an industry based on wool, olive oil mills and dairy products, highlighting its cheese production. The main production in the municipality is cereal, except in the parish seat, where the main economic activity is trade. In the municipality there is an industrial unit for the transformation of bagasse, the Casa Alta - Sociedade Transformadora de Bagaços, in the Penique Agroindustrial Park, near Odivelas.
In the parish of Odivelas, there is a hydroagricultural dam.
