Segundo informação da Autarquia de Loulé, a origem da povoação de Salir perde-se no tempo. O Castelo de Salir deverá ter sido construído durante a ocupação Almóada, no Século XII, e terá sido o local escolhido por D. Paio Peres Correia para esperar por D.
