In the eighteenth century, in the aftermath of the 1755 earthquake, it was found that the population of Alhos Vedros was already much smaller than some of the villages that depended on it before and in the nineteenth century.

Throughout the twentieth century, the parish of Alhos Vedros would continue to have an essentially rural aspect, although, from the greater development of CUF’s manufacturing unit in Barreiro, and in the second half of the century of other large industries such as Lisnave or Steel, it would gain some features of a dormitory for many families with proletarian characteristics.

In terms of industries residing in the parish, the cork sector would be the most important until the 60s/70s, followed by an intense but short expansion of the textile sector in the 70s and 80s, which would come to an end throughout the 90s.

Currently, especially in the last twenty years, it has been undergoing an accelerated process of suburbanisation that has decharacterized its traditional characteristics.

In terms of heritage, the aforementioned Mother Church of São Lourenço stands out, the only complete Manueline pillory in the district of Setúbal, the so-called Moorish well, probably from the sixteenth century and its tidal mill. However, most traces of its centuries-old origins and historical past have been progressively disappearing, as well as the rich natural heritage of the long riverside area itself has been destroyed, first with the effects of industrial pollution and then due to the rubble of the old salt pans and fish ponds that existed in the marsh area.
