Monte was the chosen final resting place of Emperor Charles I of Austria, the last of the Habsburgs of the Austro-Hungarian empire, who died here in 1922. His last residence in Madeira was Quinta do Monte, next to the Main Church. The rehabilitation of the Museum of Romanticism in Monte/Funchal is currently underway.
